Jon,
J. R. Hobbs in his nice book on the Styled Letter Series, notes that the last "early styled A" was s/n 583326, so your Dad's tractor was the 291st from the end, which would have it built in January 1947, according to the Tractor Digest, spring 1994.

jons, Sorry but the cast frame(front end support)was used on A tractors serial numbered from 522600 to 542699, during the 1943-4 production years for WW2 material adjustment. Before and after those serial numbers the front end support was welded up of plate steel and angle iron. So the early '47's were angle iron and then went to pressed steel at sn 584000.gwh

gwh, According to my info you are right in that cast frames were ONLY used during 43-44 due to wartime shortages of the angle iron used both before & after to make the front support. NO rowcrop "A"s after #542699 were made with cast iron front frames. The pressed frame started at # 584000 as you stated-the beginning of the "47 model year. I also own a very late angle iron frame "A", built in January '47, but it is still considered to be a '46 because the serial # is below 584000.----- -- After checking my serial # card from "Two Cylinder",I discovered that they use the #569610 as the beginning of the '47 model year, which would imply that the "A"s built between then & 584000, were in fact '47 models even though they still had the angle iron frame. This is about as "clear as mud" to me, if someone has a really good answer ,please explain it to the rest of us!

Jon,
The last cast frame came off the production line in February 1947, followed by the first pressed steel frame in March of 1947, starting at s/n 584000.

thanks duane for the info. thats clears up alot of our confusion. because the tractor has a cast frame but serial # for a 47. we had always thought that all 47's had pressed steel frames. thanks again.

it was my mistake in calling it a cast frame. what i meant was heavy steel straight frame. sorry about the confusion. my dad also has a 44 A that has the cast frame that you guys were talking about.

Ditto to your remarks - I made the same (rather common and careless) statement confusing the cast and steel frames when I responded initially. Bet we don't do this again...
