Best tractor for use as power-unit?

I'm thinking of a tractor to use as a simple power unit: run things off the battery, power stationary hydraulic equipment. So it would need a decent charging system, decent hydraulics, and be fuel efficient. I was thinking older 2-cylinder diesel; How far back can one go in the 2-cylinder line in a diesel and how small an engine was made in diesel? Or would a different tractor altogether be better for such? Horsepower is not an issue. Thanks for any ideas.

Joe,

One thing to bear in mind when using these 2 cylinder engines is that they don't work well when being used to drive a generator (the kind of generator you would use to run your house off of during a power-outage). They have plenty of power but the unique John Deere firing pattern does not provide the smooth running speed needed to keep these generators at a fixed frequency. The result is lights that tend to flicker (annoying) and motors that will burn up (expensive). Motors hate frequency fluxuations.

It's kind of a shame really since I'd love to run a nice PTO generator off of my model 50.

Overall I've heard that a 4 cylinder diesel is the best wey to go when running a generator. Lots of torque.

Best of luck,
John

Many older tractors don't have hydraulic systems with any oil cooling or enough oil capacity to be running newer hydraulic equipment such as those with hyd. motors for prolonged periods of time. You might get by if only short occasional use time such as cylinders which is all most older systems were designed for. Would need higher amp alternator system to keep up with much electrical load too.

Best to match the HP of the engine to the load. A lightly loaded diesel has poorer efficiency and often runs too cold causing high wear rates. What are the loads you are running, where and how?
