What lubricant should be used in the steering gearbox on a JD 420 W?

I also use the JD corn head grease on my 420S. It is a good alternative to the 140 wt. gear lube and doesn"t leak out. I drilled and tapped the drain plug on the steering box and screwed in a grease fitting. Just remove the filler plug on the upper side and pump it in until it comes out the top. Works great!

Well you may get some different opinions on this one. By the way, if your tractor has a rack and pinion power steering unit up there it has two boxes on the steering, one for the 90 degrees up top and one for the rack and pinion.

You got vertical shafts where the oil sits on the old seal and worn shaft and normally seeps out. I and some others use JD Corn Head Grease in the steering boxes, it lubes fine and it won't leak out. I am sold on that stuff for that particular application.

Henry,
Thanks for the response. What is the consistency or weight of the JD Corn Head Grease? This is new one on me.
Thanks,
Bill

Arkansas Bill, I believe that the Corn Head Grease is a "Grade O" grease (very soft) that turns into about the consistency of 30 weight oil during operation in a corn head. I doubt if you will be operating the steering gear that often to get it that warm..:-) Deere used to make a steering lubricant for the cam-lever steering gears which your tractor has. But I would agree with the others that Corn Head Grease is a good alternative. I use it in all my manual steering gears, auger gearboxes, etc. It is a good product. Hope this helps. Mike
