My brother pulls a JD B. His first gear is awful fast. Was there different ring and pinions for these? It is a 1943. Could he change 1st gear??? I know the later style B's are a LOT slower...Thanks in advance.

There is not a ring and pinion gears in a JD B.
JD used different tooth count on the gears and the shaft sizes are different between the model B's Some guys change the first reduction gear and pulley gear in model A's I don't know if these will swap in model B's The A didn't change as much over the years as the B. You could bore your block out to take the late B pistons then you would be close to the same HP.

I don't know about the slowing it down part but the early B's used a 3 spd transmission with a hi-lo to get 6 speeds. The later B's used an actual 6 speed transmission that allowed for a faster high gear and a slower low gear. This is why the later B's go slower than the earlier B's. May post on the pulling forum on this site with your other question. Hope this helps a little and have a nice day.

The six speed on late B"s and A"s as well as at least the early 70"s was still a 3 x 2, the 3 speed stick was used to shift from high to low range. I have limited knowledge , but I think the 80?, 820 and 830 had an actual 6 speed transmission.

The 39-47 styled A and B that had the 5th and 6th gear added with HI-LO were faster in all gears than the late styled 47-52 models. The 47-52 B had the single stick 6 speed as did the A after late 49. You are correct about the 70.

The late A's and B's had lower gear ratios, but the high-low was still present, although hidden under the transmission cover and acuated by the gear shift rather than a seperate lever. A very similar if not identical 3x2 transmission was used in the 60's and I presume other similar numbered tractors.

Now were on the same page. The last 3 years of the "A" and 5 years of the "B" had the new single slot quadrant.
