I am performing some maintenance on a JD 420-w and need to know: 1. Does the hydraulic system use regular hydraulic fluid or something else? 2. Where should the timing be set (TDC or so many degree before TDC? 3. What are the value lash or clearance settings on the intake and exhaust valves?

Thanks from Arkansas,
Bill

The Hydraulic system uses 10 wt NON detergent motor oil. DO NOT use detergent oil as it mixes with the moisture in the air and makes foam which will cause the pump to cavitate. I use 10 wt. hydraulic oil that you can get at Home Depot. It probable uses about 6 quarts.

The ignition setting is as follows: Points set to .022. Don"t replace the condenser unless it is bad, the new ones aren"t as good as the old ones were. Timing done from front plug and the mark is inside the teardrop shaped cover just behind the oil filter. Time to the "-SPARK-" mark with the engine at "High Idle" (+/- 2025 RPM).

Valve lash is .012 set cold with the engine not running. Bring one cylinder up to TDC for the ignition cycle and set both valves and then do the same for the other cylinder.

Thank you Kind Sir! In the absence of a service manual, you are an absolute lifesaver.
