Can anyone tell me what the small pipe on the bottom of the hydraulic pump that goes to the rear transmission is for ? What sort of pressure is it under ? Mine is made from a kind of tough black plastic tube and was wondering whether I should replace it in steel.
Thanks,

Chris.

There are two seals in the hydraulic pump, an inner "QUAD RING" that"s the actual seal, and then a lip seal visible from the outside, surrounding the pump shaft.

The plastic line is a "weep line" that is plumbed into the chamber between the two seals and returns oil to the transmission sump. When the pump is in good condition, little, if any oil leaks from the primary seal, and through the "weep line" back to the sump. As the pump bearings and primary seal wear, and some oil begans to leak past the primary seal, the line carrys it away, preventing any oil from leaking out the secondary seal. If there is more bearing wear, or the primary seal fails, the flow of oil will overwhelm the capacity of the "weep line", and will leak out past the secondary seal.

The older units had a small steel line, and often they would leak because of a hole worn in them by vibrating against something, or because of rust-through. The Deere replacement lines are plastic, and a larger diameter, probably for easier flow, and less oil pressure against the secondary seal.

The plastic line is part #AR79710, and lists for $18.50. If the tractor has NOT had the larger plastic line installed previously, there is an adapter fitting needed for each end, #R64170.
