I HAD A JD 50 THAT WOULD GET HOT AND SHUT DOWN AFTER 15 MINUTES OF PULLING A PASTURE DRAG. THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO TOO LEAN OF FUEL MIXTURE, CARBURATOR REBUILD JOB FIXED THE PROBLEM

if the coolant is circulating and still getting hot have youre radiator cap pressure checked this is often overlooked the last thing you change is always the problem you could also have the whole system pressure checked any small pin hole will make it get hot.

I always check my thermostat (including new ones) with a pan of water on the kitchen stove and a candy thermometer. I don't know if people do that any more.

Just because you put a new thermostat in, doesent mean it is any good... Check by looking into the radiator, to see if the coolant is moving...when it is warm enough for the thermostat to be open..just BE Careful, not to wait until it is hot enough to boil... If the coolant has no oil in it, and you see no bubbles, or if it is not moving..I would take the thermostat out, put it back together, and see if it get"s hot then.. I just read a post of a guy who had a similar problem with his JD "60", and used Vinegar and water to clean the lime out of his radiator, and it worked good.. Ron.

Frank makes a good point in that you should check for bubbles in the radiator. While you are at it, look at the coolant and see if there is oil in it. Check the engine oil for a milky white substance which might indicate water.

As the engine heats up, check the temperature of the radiator, the lower hose and the upper (return) pipe. Do they get hot as well? If not then the coolant is not circulating in which case you might have a clogged radiator or possibly a water pump problem. In my case the radiator was clogged.

Best of luck,
John 1953 Model 50

KY Joe:

I"d look through the open top of the radiator at the coolant and see if it has bubbles. It could very well be a leaking head gasket. That will put an enormous amount of hot gasses in the coolant jacket that is much the same as super heating the coolant with steam.

Frank
