I am planning to buy a used tractor in the next while and would appreciate any advice on what to look for when sizing up a used tractor so that I get best value for the price with the fewest headaches. I know what size I want. What concerns me most is the engine and what I should be looking for? I know that often the older models are re-painted which can hide for a time alot of sin.

a few things in a nutshell;
hard starting-an engine that starts up right away even cold is probably not in too bad a shape, does it smoke (blue smoke from lube oil), blow-by smoke from the crankcase vent, how is the clutch- the amount of adjustment-and can you stall the engine with it, hydraulics-does the hitch hold up an implement OK and not bleed down right away, is the steering loose- you should not be able to turn the wheel loosely more than 45 to 90 degrees (if it is mechanical steering or has a mechanical linkage), when driving down the road, is there unusual gear or transmission noise, check for oil and grease leaks, also antifreeze leaks, is there oil in the antifreeze or vice versa?, etc., etc., Good luck in your search and purchase.

see how big the groove is in the belt pulley and see how worn the end of the drawbar is this gives you an idea how many hours is on the tractor
