I was at a threshermen's show this weekend and while talking to an acquaintance, friends of his joined in. They all own "red" tractors and of course are quick to razz us green boys. The one fellow said he owned 5 old Farmalls but also had recently finished a JD 530 project. The other red guy asked why in the world would he want a worthless JD? The 530 owner wouldn't respond, but I was quick to respond for him. Obviously he needed a tractor that would always start so he had something to drag start those contrary red tractors with. He started to laugh and stated that it was maybe a little too close to the truth. I think we may have a convert!

I don't think you have to own different colors necessarily to render opinions on them--just have experience with them. I'm a RED guy, love 'em to death, but I'm not so blind to that color that I don't shake my head and wonder "what in the hell were they thinking?" when I study the abomination known as a FAST HITCH.

Our neighborhood is rife with Olivers--I admire how smooth and quiet they run. A JD 730D narrow front is a thing of beauty--it just looks and sounds "right". A MF35 Diesel Deluxe is just the neatest thing on rubber--I used one a lot when I was a kid. Who can't admire the brawn of a JD R or an IH W-9 or a M-H 55? Is an A-C D21 just too cool or what? Maybe a M-M G1000 takes the cake on 'cool'.

I like some more than others. I really like them all. Just stow the attitude about your color being better than mine--I get embarrassed explaining how 400# of fast hitch iron does the same thing that a Ford 9N's 50# worth does. :>

I look at it this way:

Old tractors are kinda like the Blonde, Brunette, Redhead thing. The worst I ever had was marvelous.

I like OLD TRACTORS! I have 4 JD's, 3 Farmalls, 2 Fords, 1 MM, 1 AC and 1 Allis. They all have their good points AND bad points. My favorites are the Farmall Super C, the Ford 2N and the 48 JD A. Never could understand this "bashing" of other brands that seems to take off occasionally with certain groups.

I agree with some of the others, when you have several different colors, then you can make an honest opinion. I've got a `38 A ,a `48 8N and a sorta red IH424,still want a farmall BN or a super C.I enjoy them all and they all have their good points.

When I first bought tractors, I was only interested in green and yellow because I was convinced they were the best (even though I grew up on a Ford and Massey Harris). Now I have green, red, yellow, dark green, red and yellow, orange, and gray tractors on my place. Yeah, its a virtual rainbow.

And you know what? They all have their strong points. I like the 2 cyl. sound. I like the smoothness of a 6 cyl. I like the controls and maneuverability of the red tractors. And for little jobs the red and gray tractors are hard to beat.

IMO, those that are color-blind are missing out on some great experiences. I think everyone that collects should own more than one color just so when they are bragging about their favorite color they have some experience to base it on!

I agree with GMorrison. However I can"t claim the older and wiser ploy as I am only 25. I love tractors and collect them because it brings back pleasent memories for me. One of my first pictures of me and my grandfather was on his "46 A. I was 1 year old at the time. If it would have been a farmall H I would collect those. Many of you miss the point of the hobby. Its to bring back memories, save the past and what you grew up with and to pass it on to the generations who wouldn"t never know if it weren"t for people like us. I am a better person I feel for what I do. It keeps me out of trouble and makes me appreciate the things that were sacrificed to get me here today. I love green but I would buy anything if it had special meaning to me. Do I talk badly about other colors or people that have other colors??? Not hardly, I am curious because I don"t own one. My .02 worth

Stan, thank you very much for that...it means a lot. I just love the hobby so much I just hate to see people bicker over the little stuff like color. You know? Any way thanks again and I hope all is getting back to "normal" in your neck of the woods.

Kris,

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, but for some reason I'm not getting notification when someone replies to one of my posts.

Things didn't get too bad around here (Melbourne area), but they're slowly getting back to "normal" in the center of the state. Thanks for asking.

Stan

I main passion is collecting JD and I have several of them but I also have IH, Oliver, MH, and Case tractors. I bought the Oliver 70 and the MH 55/555 because they were dirt cheap. The Case L came with some farmland I bought and we used to be all IH before going to JD. Thats why I other tractors besides JD.

My dad always had Farmalls. But when I was about 10 years old. My first job was driving tractor for our neighbor for the summer baling hay. He had a early 50's John Deere A on the baler. Been hooked on the 2 cylinders ever since. First I went into drag racing, then into street rods. Know it's the old tractors. Like the shows and get togethers. My favorite color is red. But my favorite tractors are 2 cylinder green. I have a 36A and 44B, plus I still have my Dads Farmall H and 340.

I have three different colors. Why? Because my grandfather bought a "43 H Farmall new and grew up driving it. My other grandfather had a JD B and I drove it a little as well. Myself, when I had a chance, bought both of them only after I had bought a piece of a "49 8N and restored it to use on my small farm. I never got the chance to use a little Ford and wanted to see what they were/are like. I love them all!

When I was young I got into cars.
Later it was motorcycles.
Not too long after that came trucks.
And recently I have been inaugurated to the world of tractors.

One thing that all of these have in common is that most folks seem to be convinced that whatever brand they like is the best - even if common sense and history prove otherwise.

I was going to buy a Farmall - not because of any particular mechanical or family reason, but because red happens to be my favorite color.

Upon discovering a large, friendly, helpful, and very local (the President is a neighbor down the road) John Deere club I was "convinced" to buy Green. Why? Because a good support group has a value beyond estimation. To me a tractor is a tool, and ANY old tractor is a lifestyle statement I like.

Come to think of it, any of those old Chevrolets or Fords I used to look down on would look pretty good in my garage these days...

Maybe we do get wiser as we get older...

Gregg
