I pulled the head on my Model R to fix a leaky exhaust valve problem, and had a look at the cylinder walls and the piston tops. On one piston, there are two cracks on the edge of the opening into the inner chamber (what JD calls the "air cell" of the piston). Of course I'm not really keen on replacing the pistons (using 6.125 pistons and reboring the cylinders, etc, etc), so I'm wondering what my options are. Do you think having a pro weld the cracks will work? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I think you can replace the piston and have a better job than a pro weld for somewhat the same money. I had somewhat the same experience, but our cylinder wall was scored, so we went .045 over. I do have one VERY NICE standard R piston #R233R with good rings attached. Good Luck. Don

Hi Don,

Do you still have this piston available? If so, would you mind emailing me with the particulars?

Thanks!

By the time you pull the piston(s) and to do the job right, you will be better off just using the bigger piston and probably close to the same money. If you want a patch job, I have some used R pistons. Good Luck

Well, I'm interested in your Model R pistons. Would you mind sending me an email with your price? And so you know, I'm in Canada, so let me know how you'd like to be paid too, OK? [email protected]

Thanks!
