820 D rack problem

I bought a black dash 820 last year and used it for plowing. I noticed it was way short on power. I opened up the cover to check the rack setting. The book says that it should be set at 12.5. It currently shows between 4 and 5! When I turn the adjusting screw out to increase rack setting nothing happens. If I turn the screw in the rack setting gets even less. I have the tractor shut off and the throttle open all the way when I check the rack. One thing I noticed was that the rack setting did not change no matter where I had the throttle. Am I doing something wrong? Do I have a problem with my governor? Should the rack not come out further when you turn the screw out more? Any help at all is greatly appreciated!

Is the linkage properly set where it turns the corner from the govenor down to the fuel rack?

Those rack adjustment instructions are not all that generous in detail. It has been my experience that the rack does not move with the throttle if the engine is not running. My limited understanding is that the rack is moved by the governor. The throttle only limits how far the governor is allowed to open things up.

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong on this. You are already ahead of me in the game as I could never figure the rack reading number thing out. I don't worry so much about what the rack reading is but rather turn the screw out a half turn at a time and see how she does. When you start getting a lot of black smoke, you just back off a quarter turn or so. I guess the best method would be to tune it on a dyno to maximize hp without overfueling.

Does the rack move freely when moved by hand?If not,it sounds like you may have a plunger and barrel problem.

When I turn the screw in the rack moves freely in that direction. It does not move out any further than between 4 and 5. Do you think I have something stuck? Should the rack move to different positions with the tractor off and just moving the throttle?

With the tractor off, and looking at the rack numbers, the rack should be wide open, or at least as far as the governor will allow it to open. Sounds like one of two things, the governor is not adjusted properly, or the linkage that comes into the governor housing is not adjusted properly, which would restrict how far the governor will allow the racks to open. The rack should move back and forth with no restriction when freed up.

Is there a better publication that would address the governor/rack adjustments besides the service manual which I already have?

John,

I have both the JD tech manual and an I&T manual for my 720 diesel. The information is not much different between the two. I still believe your best bet is to turn the screw out a little at a time until you get it right.

That rack rod should move freely. You can move them easily with your fingers. When you turn the screw out, the rod should move with it. That rack adjustment doesn't take much in the wrong direction to kill the power. I adjusted my brother's 80 when he got it and wasn't thinking clearly. I turned the screw in about a turn & a half and all of the sudden the tractor wouldn't move itself in 5th gear. If you were truly getting a rack reading of 4 or 5, I don't think you would be able to do much of anything with that 820.
