Hi,Finally got to check out the distributor.
It was sparking on one side only so i swaped around the points/no luck, then the condenser/no luck so i got a volt meter and i sent current through the good side coil and it beeped and then i sent current throught the bad side coil and NOTHING.So this must mean its a bad coil-right?

John, it sure sounds like you have an open coil there..

First give the coil a good sniff testIf it smells burnt it probably is burnt out.. Those pony coils are real easy to fry if you ever left the pony ignition on with the pony not running [just takes a few minutes]..

Your buzz test is probably about as good as any.. You can also take one of the coils black pigtail wires & hook it to 6 volts then scratch the other black lead to a clean spot thats hooked to the other battery post.. If you get a sparking as the wire is dragged across the ground the coil is probably working.. If no spark then that coil is as dead as Elvis..

If you replace that coil try to match the new coil to the old one [most new coils are plastic coated]..

John, if theres no continuity i.e. an OPEN circuit in the coils primary YES its bad. (Assuming thats where you correctly took the reading) To be sure youre actually reading the coil ONLY (from input to where it wires to points) it should be unhooked, then measure between where it receives its input voltage to where it wires to its points. The coils low voltage primary side is very low ohms and can burn up and become an open circuit if the ignition is left on for too long a period which happens and often leaves that tell tale burnt electrical/insulation smell. Frank n Clooney drew up a simple protection circuit using an oil pressure switch to prevent that as many people forget n leave the pony ignition on and fry the coil opening the primary.

If she reads an open circuit theres no continuity circuit path and its bad. When the points are closed it provides the ground return path so current flows through the coils primary. When the points open, that path is broken and the coil fires. The high voltage secondary side is at the to plug wire terminals and its several thousand ohms.

Take care n God Bless

John T

I tested the coils when they were out of the distributor and there and when connected to a volt meter/buzzer one buzzed and the other didn"t so i guess the one which didnt wasn"t connected full circle/burned out.

Yeppers, if the buzz means its a continuous circuit and no buzz not, the no buzzer coil must be bad/open circuit, assuming its measured correct at the right terminals. Thats why one can place a test lamp at the points and when they are opened if she dont glow the coils primary may be bad/open (among other possibilities)

Sounds like youre gettin there, good luck. John T
