When I turn the light on the tractor (while running)...they stay on about 30 seconds then the alt. light comes on and the light go out. What do I need to check? It is a 1974 3 cyl. 830 JD, it has a brand new bosch alternator.

Sounds like something is grounding out. Does it discharge the battery when the lights are not turned on? You may want to look at the wiring schematic and shoot the wires to see if there is a bad relay, short, or a wire grounding out. Just a thought, hope it is of some help.

As far as I know....the battery does not discharge when the lights are off. But, the battery was down when I tried to restart the tractor. Could the battery be bad and not exciting the alternator to charge?

Greg, I am far from the expert on this. Did this happen prior to the new alternator? It's possible that there is a relay stuck, or maybe the regualtor isn't working properly. If this isn't the problem then I would start at either the alternator, battery, or light switch and trace the wires back from there to see where the fault is at.
