Having just Imported a 70 diesel from Canada, iam am just wondering am i better to use genuine parts or are aftermarket just as good.As i am living here in Ireland genuine would be easier to get hold of through my local dealer but if i could get a good aftermarket contact in the US who would be willing to ship parts to Ireland at realistic cost, it should be easier on the pocket.Mostly what i need is general service items, seat cushions, decals, electrical items and maybe some pony engine parts.ANY help in this regard would be most appreciated.

JohnF2020:

There are several suppliers that can help you, but much depends on the system you are renovating at the time. I have my favorites depending if I need parts and advice on the diesel engine fuel injection system, pony ignition, pony carburetor, major engine, decals, paint, general parts and bearings, trim, etc.

A good contact to start with would be Greg Stepehen at www.theoldtractorcompany.com

Greg is a JD dealer and he has a side business which handles after market and used parts as well. Having gone through my own 70D a couple of years ago, I can tell you that Gerg helped me find parts many times.

Here's my "well-worn and still working in the field" 70D.

There has been a pile of diesel and all-fuel two cylinders bought by Irish collectors/users as of late? Are there people collecting over there? Or is there demand for tractors that will run on the much cheaper kerosene vs gasoline or even diesel?

John2020, I would use aftermarket on some things and john deere parts on others. If your looking to restore your 70 alot of the parts you get from john deere are not like the originals. The after market parts makers have gone to alot of trouble to produce a part that is as close to the orignal as you can get.You need to do your homework when looking for parts and compare prices , quality and correctness( if this is important to you).A good place to start would be to suscribe to green magazine there are alot of dealers listed in this and you ccan expand your serch from there. Good luck!

John2020, I don't think any one supplier can supply you with all the parts you might want or need. There are so many choices if you can give me your address i would be willing to mail you one of my back issues of green mag. and it would give you an idea of what i mean. Jim

Hi John,

I live in the Netherlands. I've restored a 50 and an 1938 A. Now I'm working on a 6030. Mostly I orderd my parts, if availble, at my local Deere dealer. But look out, if the partnumber are changed, for a sub number, it's not the same part, but something that will get as close to the original as it gets. If you want your tractor as close as the original you better look for reproductions parts. Never take the decals from Deere, because they aren't the correct ones...but that's only my advice..

good luck with your tractor

Greetings Mark
