A while back I had posted a note about adjustment on the solenoids inside a voltage regulator. My 3020 has what appears to be a stock regulator but when I checked the point air gaps they were way off. Well, after having adjusted the air gaps on the regulator solenoids myself, my 3020 fires up much better now that the battery is getting charged more. I checked the output and it is just slightly higher voltage than the book says. So I guess time will tell if I overadjusted; if I boil off too much battery water I'll have to tweak the gaps again. I run it at low RPM a lot and often with the lights on, so it might be OK in my case. So hopefully the moral of my story is 'one CAN adjust the VR himself.'

Joe P., you say...

Answ, those regulators are not all the same & if there was a running change since the air gap numbers were published your regulator might not match the one the air gaps were given for.

Answ, that"s about all you can do.. If your run times are short you won"t have any problems with a little higher voltage.. If your tractor spends hours on end at higher RPM in field usage you will probably overcharge the battery.. Get the tractor [& charging system] working hot then check the voltages again if its still high you might want to readjust the charging voltage slightly lower.. The air gaps are only part of the adjustment equation, point spring tension is also a big factor..

Let us know how it does in the long run..

Congratulations Joe, adjusting air gaps and springs etc can sure be done as you did, but unfortunately I dont have access to specs or data etc that some of the folks here do so I have to use my meter and sort of tweak them in by ear lol. As far as the possibility of overcharging, I would keep an eye on the battery for signs of excess outgassing or boiling over acid as you indicated, and if you added an accurate voltmeter, that could help, but some Ive seen dont have very good resolution. If the ammeter continues to show high charge rates despite long hours of use running no lights and the battery is good, you might wanna keep a close eye on it, as an overcharge can harm a battery as much as undercharging.

Again, congratulations n God Bless ya
