PTO clutch on 5020

I recently bought a 5020 that has the PTO engagement lever in the floorboard and a handle on the left side of the cowl that is susposed to disengage the PTO. The PTO runs, but the handle does not stop the PTO, and in fact, I feel no resistance when working the handle back and forth. Is this likely to be a complicated fix?

The lever on the floorboard disconnects the whole pto system, the lever on the left turns on and off the pto. The on-off cable is on the left side of the clutch housing. You use a pressure guage to check and adjust the linkage to 15 psi on the pto brake.

Tom,

I borrowed an IT Manual to get the details of your answer to my question. There is one difference, the IT says 60 PSI for the pressure adjustment. You indicated 15 pounds. Did you get your figure from a John Deere book? Thanks

I had a 5420 ( 2002 ) that I bought brand new. The PTO does NOT have any braking on the PTO. I ran a JD CX15 ( 15 foot rotary mower )on it and it took forever for the blades to stop. My new 6320 has a brake on the PTO. Doesn't stop fast, but much better. The handle you discribed on the 5020 sounds just like the one I had on the 5420. Hope this helped..... Gerry
