What can anyone tell me about an oversized PTO shaft on a JD GM? The shaft measures 1-3/4". This is on a friend's tractor, and he would like to know why it's an odd size.

Joe, there was a range of those G"s that had the larger 1-3/4" PTO shaft splines.. There wasn"t an industry standard for PTO size or spline size at that time so Deere just over-killed those G"s with a large shaft & splines.. Deere later offered a kit to bring that shaft down to industry standard size..

You can use a spline adapter but that places the front PTO shaft u-joint a long ways back from the rear shaft bearing & places a tremendous strain on the PTO shaft when turning corners & the u-joint starts to bind up.. You usually have to lengthen out the drawbar to get the front u-joint close to pivot point. If you have an aftermarket 3-point hitch on that G it gets even worse.. I have in the past cut the 1-3/4 splines off & welded on the later smaller splines from a later tractor..

Joe, Ive owned a few G's with the larger 1 3/4 PTO and its my understanding the industry at that time wasnt yet standardized to the 1 3/8 PTO and the G had pretty hefty torque for its day rememeber. Some of the smaller tractors like some of the Fords had the even smaller 1 1/8 PTO in that time period. I just used an adapter on the G's I owned and had no problems.
