first reduction gear shaft

I put new bearings on the input shaft, and when i roll the reduction gear, with cover on, it has a slight tight spot to it. It's not bad but it does not just free wheel like it did when the cover and gear were not on it. Also with cover on and everything tight the shaft has some side to side movement, about 10 to 15 ths. is this normal are is this not right. I appreciate any info, Ken.

Ken, you shouldn't have any tight spots.. Make sure the cotter pin isn't interfering under the outer small cover.. If that isn't the problem you should go back through it & find the problem [maybe just a tight bearing but you should make sure]..

On that lateral play.. Try removing the outer smaller bearing cover gasket & seeing if the play is less.. If so, just install the outer cover using Loc-Tite 518 as a gasket & leave the gasket out..

You really want to be sure everything is correct before buttoning that tractor up so you don�t have costly future problems..

Clooney the small bearing cover is off. With the outer bearing out the shaft turns freely. With bearing in, nut off, it gets a slight tight spot and does not spin as free as i think it should. It acts like the shaft might be bent, but cannot find any wobble with dial gages. Guess i will look a little deeper. Thanks Ken.
