40S starter spinning w/o crank: removing starter?

Hello, all.

I've been using an old 40S with bushhogging, hauling, and disking. The last few times, though, we've had to push-
start it. Suddenly, a day after working fine, on ignition the starter whirred and spun but there was no audible connection with the engine, no cranking at all. I suspect something wrong with "power train" between starter and cylinders? I tried to remove the starter, but am faced with an unusal bolt: an "allen key" head turning inside a larger, standard hexagonal bolt. Here's the immediate question: do they both turn the same way?

More generally: ideas about what could be wrong, and how to get it working again?

Thanks!
john.

John, that starter should be held in with a 5/8" set screw & that nut on it is a lock nut. First loosen the lock nut, then the set screw should screw right out.. Both turn the same direction [lefty loosey]..

On your starter problem.. You will know more when you get it out but the usual problem is a broken starter drive [bendix].. Those 40s are also noted for taking the teeth off the flywheel but it usually grinds when that happens..

Pull the starter out then post back once you find the problem & we can help you repair it..

If you look at the posting times Clooney was saying about the same thing at about the same time, unaware that you were posting.

The starter is probably stuck, they get that way
sometimes from setting and moisture collecting
over the years.Sometimes a whack with a hammer
will help, but usually just temporary. You can remove the starter buy turning the nut to the left,it's just a lock nut, then back out the screw
all the way.It might just need cleaned up a little. Also the solenoid on the starter might not
be making connection properly, but if the starter
is turning the starter drive is probably stuck.

It's more of a hand operated mechanical switch than an electrically operated solenoid. It does sound like a stuck bendix drive.
