Father in Law's 6400 did the same thing. It ended up being a defective PTO switch. Thats one of the nice things about these modern tractors. I often wonder when I'm operating the 6400 if it will be running in 30 to 40 years? Hopefully they will be, but I sorta doubt it. As for myself I push the manual lever on my 66 4020 ,and the PTO clutch engages everytime. Anyhow, good luck, and I didn't mean to be smart about it, I just hate that mid 90's 6400 4 wheel drive, for just the type of reasons you discribe. Brush hog with it disconnect a wire, and you can't get it out of 4 wheel drive, I hate that tractor. Big tractor, small engine with a turbo, wont lug worth a crap on a hill, with a loaded wagon behind it, I hate that tractor. Barn caught on fire a year ago, all the older tractors appeared unscaved except the 6400, it nearly melted down on the right hand side, did I mention that I hate that tractor. I'm not a person who thinks John Deere didn't make a tractor after 1960, but I personaly don't see a need to buy anything made after the late 80's. Still those tractors are nearly 20 years old. Lord time is flying. Good Luck, Greg H.
