I decided the other day that i needed more wheel weights for my R john deere (that has 3 sets of the oval center hole wheights on it already). So i made some calls to the salvage yards in the area (the closest is 45-50 miles away from where i live) and they said that they had six sets of john deere wheel weights on hand so i said id take them but i was at work 75 miles away they closed at 5:30 and i dont get off work until 5 so i sent my brother after them. when i get home from work only one was actually a John deere wheel weight the rest from a good distance look like Deere weights but have no casting or part numbers of any kind anywhere, the stud holes are 3/4 instead of 5/8 diameter holes and the casting isnt as smooth or as high of quality as john deeres( a couple even have voids and divits in them). also they were never shot peened infact theres still sand from the moldings on them and they seem to be a little heaiver and thicker than a genuine Deere weight. HAS ANY ONE SEEN SOME THING LIKE THIS BEFORE? IF SO WHERE DID THEY COME FROM WAS THER A COMPANY THAT COULD ALMOST COPY JOHN DEERS CASTING AND SELL THEM OR WHAT?I think i can make them work since the extra weight are only gonna be for tractor pulling but im kinda disapointed since i paid 100 bucks per set for john deere and ended up with some thing thats of lesser quality .

We ran into the same thing a few years back. We found the aftermarket weights to be virtually useless for tractor pulling unless you intend to place them on the tractor and leave them there. We use the original JD bolts in the weights and had a hard time with lining the weights up when putting them on. It seems that the hole pattern in every one is just a little bit different. We even tried marking closely matched sets, but when switching weights in a hurry, that was a pain also.

The other problem was that the centering flange that sticks out on the weights for the next one to sit on were all of different thickness and would only allow certain weight to be placed over them.

Thank God that we found various people that only needed a single set on their tractor to buy them all. I personally will not buy a wheel weight unless it is John Deere original and has the A3404R number cast into it. There were several different molds used for the A3404R weights, I would assume they were made at various founderies throughout the country to save on shipping. Even though they are not identical, they must have been made to pretty close tolerances as every single one that I have found mates up perfectly to each other.

Also, I don't know where you are located, but around here we are paying up to $150 per set for authentic JD wheel weights. You will even see people paying more than that on ebay and that doesn't include shipping. Maybe you can unload those albatros' on ebay or even the classified ads on this board. Good luck with your oddball weights.
