Well, you're kind of in two different horsepower ranges, with the 4055 being about a 105 hp tractor and the 4440 being closer to 4440. But, the 4055 is probably the superior machine. Horsepower notwithstanding, the 6076 engine in the 4055 is easily superior to the 6466 (both are 466 cubes/7.6 liters - the 6076 was the new and improved 466) used in the 4440. I've seen one particular 4055 cranked up that would pull with some mighty strong bigger tractors and beat most of them at farm stock pulls, so that potential is there, even if you're not into pulling. Speaks volumes about the toughness of the 6076. Better flowing head and intake, better head gasket sealing, etc. The earlier 4440s also used a cam-driven oil pump that can give some problems in high-hour tractors that were used for choring and other daily work in cold climates. The pump itself is fine, but after years and years of daily cold starts with thick oil, the gear on the cam can get thin and fail completely, causing a loss of oil pressure and necessitating a cam replacement. Worst-case is crank and bearing damage if you don't get it shut down quickly. The 4055 also is available with the 15-speed powershift, which is a more reliable powershift than the 8-speed, as there is no possibility of torsional damper slippage as on the 8-speed. The 55-series cab is also nicer and more comfortable inside. Don't get me wrong, the 4440 is a darn good and even legendary tractor, and I'd love to have one, but the 4055 is simply newer and nicer yet. And more expensive.

The 4440 being closer to 140 horsepower, not 4440 horsepower, lol.

While the Deere 4020 was the best tractor of it's time, the 4440 was the best tractor EVER. I have one, and I'm looking for another. The sound-guard cab was a great acheivement in operator comfort. The rest of the --30 series tractor was a rehash of the --20 series for the most part. The --40 series was a copletely new tractor. More cubic inches in the engine, more iron in the trannys, just a better all around tractor. They hold up better, resell better, and just perform better than anything made prior. Find yourself a good 4440, and you'll have a tractor for life. John
