Bare with me as I'm mechanically challenged!
My 855 won't turn over..turn the key and just a click. All lights work but won't start. I had problems recently with it not shutting off and my dealer "lubed the fuel shut off on the solenoid" and it took care of the problem. I've only had it back a week and used it only a few hours. Just coincidence or could they be related? Any suggestions are appreciated. thanks,
jon c in NH

My thanks for all the advise I received!! I tried your suggestions and you were on the money. Turns out that when my recent service was done the technician made some adjustments to the hydro f/r pedals and the result was the safety switch getting tripped.
I'll try and figure out how to re-adjust the pedals myself.
thanks again,
jon c. in n.h.

855 Adjustment; Any chance you can get the repair manager to get the service technician out to your site on his dime. Why should you pay and service bill and then use your time to clean up some sloppy work? Either way, Good luck.

I did talk to the service mgr and he did send out a technician. He adjusted the pedals so the problem is fixed..although he wouldn't admit that it was his initial adjustment that caused the problem. He said it may have been the cause but also said that the safety switch is complex and may have been acting up due to wear. Funny, I never had the problem before he adjusted it the first time. My thanks again for all the feedback..your replies sent me in the right direction and made me appear not totally naive when speaking with the service mgr.

Jon:

If it were me, I would not mess with those pedal adjustments until you have a JD service manual in hand. The adjustments are pretty critical so that you don't have the forward pedal trying at the same time the reverse is engaging. So, long story short, move the switch adjustment only. ;)

Hello Jon C. - guess there are two of us, as I post on this site now and then.

I dont know mutch about an 855, but I would start with the obvious (which you probably already did) - a good battery, clean battery terminals, and clean good connections at the solinoid.

You may want to short accross the solinoid posts with a screwdriver to see if it turns over to bypass the key switch.

Jon:

This must be the week for this! I have an 855, and I went out to the shed on Saturday and it would only click. I thought it was a low battery and that maybe I had left the switch on (but, looking back, if it had been left on that long, it should not have even lit the dash lights).

Anyway, I put the charger on, and after an hour, I gave it another try. Still a click. I began to suspect the starter solenoid, but decided to snap it a few more times. It caought an worked fine on about the third try. My luck.

So, check your battery voltage and see if you have a battery/cable problem, make sure the forward/reverse pedals aren't sitting against the safety switches (rock them with your foot as you try to crank it), tap on the solenoid a bit as you try to crank it, check for voltage at the solenoid as you crank it, check for voltage out of the solenoid as you crank it.

Today is a good day to rig up that 12 volt test light and alligator clip assembly you always wanted!

Jon...WE got one to that has the same problem.Usually I can shake the wires behind the ignition switch and it will take off.You might also try to center the forward - reverse if it's a hydro.Or try the battery cables.Hope this helps.
