I have a Standard W John Deere engine that my father in law left when he died. It was originally used to run a sawmill but was taken off for an updated Detroit. The JD ran as long as 5 years ago and has sat under the shed unweathered for that long. To me it is very good condition and clean. Basically, I would like to know how this thing runs to get it in working condition again. I was told that it ran with kerosene and gasoline. Joe change all the fluids such as oil in crankcase,water or antifreeze in radiator,make sure the fuel tank is clean,the big tank is for kerosene little tank is for gas(to start engine with)install new plugs and check magnito for fire,if you don't have any fire take it off(note how you take it off so it will be easier to put back on). Joe when you get the mag. backtiming could be a problem if you have never done it,take left spark plug out and turn engine over till you here compression coming out of spark plug hole,stop and look at flywheel you will see the letters LEFT HAND IMPULSE at the three o'clock position,number one cylinder should fire. These engine's are hard to crank,what I do is bring #1 up on compression stroke,with primer cups open and fill them with gasoline then turn flywheel clockwise about one quarter to one half of a turn, then roll flywheel back counterclockwise and engine should start,remember this big iron and don't fight it,if you done your home work right it will start.If you have a problem call 1-859-744-1049 late in the evening (nine o'clock) Gman
