Loose clutch driving disk on JD B crankshaft

My JD "B" is loose now thanks to bolting a channel iron onto the flywheel and rocking it back and forth. Cylinders look good. I did take the head off. Questions??? 1) Should I pull the pistons and check the rings? It was stuck for a couple of years due to rain water down the intake pipe. Then I could check the end gap and make sure they are not stuck. #2 The pulley is loose on the crankshaft. Either the driving disk or the crankshaft is worn. Probably both. Seems to be tightened up all of the way. What are my options in taking up the slack? Thanks.

Since you have it down already this is a good time to go ahead and look it over thoroughly.

For my B restoration, I'm taking it on as a one-time, complete teardown and restoration. The whole thing was in very poor condition when I got it, and I've been tackling it piece by piece over the last several years. I had to get the crank main journals polished and rod journals turned down, and that's when I noticed the splines for the clutch driver were badly worn. I couldn't see putting this much effort into rejuvenating the engine and then put it back together with a nearly worn-out part that would require another complete teardown a few years down the road. I was referred to another machine shop that welded up the splines and reground them. It cost me $250 for that spline job, but I'll feel better knowing my entire crankshaft is 100% when I'm all done.

Andy,
Pull the pistons and check the rings. I have only found one stuck tractor that didn't have a stuck ring or 2 or 3 or all. The last "D" I took apart had all of the rings stuck and still ran. New rings should be only 100 -125 bucks and it is well worth it. When you take it apart make sure you lay it out with tags on the parts so you can get it back together the same as it came out.stamped numbers on the piston rods face up . They will be marked 1 and 2.

Andy, it is according to what you are going to use it for. If all it will be doing is parading or idling and running easy you may can get by if it has enough compression to start and run decent and Loctite makes some real good plastic steel epoxies now that Industries use for shaft buildups to get by til time will allow permanent fixes You just have to be the Judge. Make sure the valves are free and lube down the cylinders before you start it. Then work it awhile and it may free on up and get you by . Let us hear from You on this matter. Good Luck Buds
