I'm working on restoring a 1927 D. It's stripped down to the main case. Had to do some tranny work, repair a few castings, replace the clutch discs and bearings, etc. etc. I'm almost down to the cosmetic work. While I have been cleaning up the innards, I've found that one piston skirt is broken below the oil groove. It runs fine, and looks like it has been broken for a while, since the shrapnel was encased in sludge at the bottom of the oil sump and in the galley beneath the cam.

Would you replace the piston, or just continue the clean up and run it as is? Does anyone have a resource for a 6 3/4" piston (part no. D2822R)? (Original bore, not oversize) If I replace it, should I install new rings? Should I use the old connecting rod, or should I get the rod with the used piston?

I would not worry to much about a small chip in a big piston like that,it probably got chiped while it was being installed the last time it was apart, but I would install new rings since it was apart, the old rings probably wont seat. Make sure you hone the cylinders. Will this be a parade tractor? Have fun ----Harold P.S I have run a 70G for severl yrars with a chiped piston

Yes it will be a parade tractor. It's working days are over. A few shows, maybe. The most use it will see is loading and unloading from a trailer.

The bottom 1.25" of the piston is gone. (Just about all of it below the lower oil groove. The amount that is exposed below the cylinder at BDC.) Didn't know if this was enough to worry about. It has run fine before I started cleaning it up, and I suspect it will continue to run fine if I just put it back together. I just wasn't sure if there would be any long term effect on cylinder wall wear, or any harmonic problems. If I could find a piston reasonable, I would just put one in so I wouldn't have to worry about it.

That almost looks like there is to much missing off that piston. My 70 has a half moon chunk about the size of the top of a pop can missing. that was where the con rod banged against it when we removed it.It would probably be better to find a good used one at some wreaker. keep us posted. Harold

Where did you get your clutch facings from, John Deere? I have a 27 that I am restoring, but can't find any facings anywhere, I was told I would have to get them from a JD dealer, so I am just wondering where you found yours at.

I got some clutch facings from someone who works at a auto clutch factory, the ID was right and the width so I chucked them in my lathe and turned down a little off the OD worked great cost nothing. A local brake and clutch shop may be able to sell you some cheap.

The choice is TOTALLY yours, but personally after doing all that work I could not put it back together without a complete piston, new rings, and haveing that rod checked to see if it is bent causeing that piston to go too far back. I'm just funny that way--If I absoulutly had to put it back the way it was, after a long and hard search for parts,it would always bother me and eventually I'd find the parts and have to tear it apart again and redo just to clear my consious.
