How To Tell If Turbo Is Working

I recently purched a 5020 with a M & W turbo. I don't hear any whine coming from the turbo. What is a quick and easy way to tell if the turbo is spinning correctly. There is a short piece of 3 inch or so rubber hose held by radiator clamps between the turbo and intake. Can I loosen this and tell if it is blowing correctly. I am new to diesels, as this question may indicate.

The only way to tell if the turbo is really working is by checking boost pressure with a gauge on the intake manifold with the motor pulling hard.

All you have to do is take the clean air pipe of f the turbo and start the tractor and see if the turbo is turning or not.

Wayne, you say the clean air pipe. Are you speaking of the pipe between the air cleaner and the turbo, in other words, preceding the turbo.

Yes I'm talking about the pipe that comes from your air cleaner and goes to the turbo. You want to be carefull because there will be a lot of suction here especially if you rev up the tractor.
The thing is though you don't have to rev up the motor to see if it is working or not. Just start the tractor and let it idle and look to see if it is turning. If it is it probabley is OK. If not you have a problem.

Yes he is refering to the pipe between the air cleaner and the turbo. Be very careful doing this method though because if the turbo is working properly it will create a good amount of vacuum. If there is any dirt, dust, or trash it will likely get sucked up and blow directly into the motor. I prefer to just(with the motor off) undo the air cleaner pipe and reaching in and turning it myself and checking for endplay or wore out bearings. You will see a small amount of play in the bearings normally, very small amount. But if it is enough that the impeller is touching the housing then rebuild it. Just remember with turbos it is not usually a good idea to wait until it goes bad to fix it. If anything gets loose and starts grinding or comes apart it is going directly to the pistons. Most of the time they can be rebuilt alot cheaper than buying new.

If there is a pipe threaded port in the intake manifold (such as the ether injection port), check the pressure in the intake manifold when the engine is revved up and loaded. As I recall, the spec for the 6-619 in an 8630 is 26 psi at rated horsepower, and while your 5020 with an aftermarket turbo is not likely to reach that much boost, there will definitely be measurable pressure in your intake manifold with the engine revved up and loaded, if the turbo is working.

Perhaps someone has a manifold pressure spec for the M&W turbo system you have and will post it.

Take those clamps off and reach in there to see if the fan turns freely. That is the way I checked mine.

put it under load then loosen the hose clamps and do it again, but not too long.
you should be able to tell right away or sooner.
