STX 38 won't start

My STX 38 will only start if I jump the battery directly to the starter. The mower will mow then entire yard fine afterwards, and I can use the switch to shut it off. I've tried traqcing the wires, but cannot find an inline fuse.

Is there any way to test the switch to see if it is bad other than buying a new one? Also, what else is between the battery (cleaned terminals) and the starter other than the switch?

Several of the Deere units had problems with not having enough current through all the safety switches to operate the starter solenoid after a few years of wear and tear to the electrical system. Deere came up with a starter improvement kit that was basically a relay that you connected near the starter to give full battery voltage to the starter solenoid. A knowledgeable Deere partsman should be able to tell you i fthis applies to your unit.

Of course, you'll still need to be sure the key switch and safety switches are functioning. Also, make sure you have a GOOD battery that is up to full voltage, and clean and check the connections at the battery, and also trace the battery ground cable up to where it attaches to one of the engine-to-frame bolts, ans make sure that connection is clean and tight.

Here's the number for the kit: AM107421, less than $20.00. I just talked to the lawn and garden service guy at the local dealer, and he says they have used numerous ones on balky STX-38's.

If you take the four screws out of the cover under the fender where you key swicth is youll find a fuse in there. might be your problem also. might have to take the tire off too ..

Sounds like the solenoid is bad to me. Trace the wires from your ignition switch and you should find a round device with red and black wires coming out of it. This is most likely your problem...
