Does anyone know how to adjust the rock shaft on a 1970 3020 row crop utility? The local JD dealer has never seen one,nor can they find any info on how to adjust. The rock shaft only moves at the top of the lift lever stroke and the movement is all or nothing (up and down). This is true in all three draft settings (L,LD,D)It seems like the input shaft/gear assy needs to move several teeth foward. The lift is very different than a regular 3020. Thanks JRC

WELD SOCKET TO CHEAP EXTENSION-LESS LIKELY TO FALL OFF AND A LOT EASIER THAN PULLING OFF ROCKSHAFT TO RETRIEVE DROPPED SOCKET

Thanks for the responce. I have the tractor at a JD dealer. I faxed the first responce to them. they are going to try. I told them if I found the "how to" I should get a discount! They were unable to find any info on this tractor at all! Can't say "Thanks" enough. Let's hope this fixes the problem. Other wise the tractor is great shape. I normaly collect Farmall, This is my second John Deere. JRC

I don't know if yours adjusts like msb explains or not but if it does I use duct tape to tape that socket on so as not to loose it.

With the tractor warmed up and running, set the load and depth lever in the middle setting.Remove the bung plug at the rear of the tractor(slightly right of the center of the tractor).Set the front(back edge on console models) edge of the lever on 4.Then with a 9/`6" socket taped very firmly to a long extension (or better yet welded to a rod about15" long)reach inside the hole with the socket. There is a castellated nut that has to be pushed forward before it can be turned.(Take a look with a flashlight)Turn it counter clockwise (slowly) until the 3 pt. arms begin to raise.Remove the socket.Don't lose that socket or the rockshaft housing will have to come off the retreive the socket .Next raise the 3pt. (with the lever) all the way up.Let it set a few seconds and then slowly move the lever until the arms just begin to drop.Hopefully the lever should be on 1.If not readjust the nut to where the difference is split between 1 & 4.Finally,with the L&D set in D,check to see if the arms are fully raised when the lever is just touching the top of the slot.Lift the arms to verify them being fully raised. If not, adjust the cable on older tractors or the rod on side console models until the arms are fully raised. If it is very far out of adjustment the repeat the other adjustment.

THEY FOUND THE PROBLEM!! The dealer called me yesterday. There is a "block" missing somewhere in the lift control. They also found a used part in Ohio for $20.00. It is being UPSed in and I should have the tractor back this weekend! I can't wait to see how much this will cost! thanks for all of the responce I recieved. I am new to John Deere (old red power fan).
