I have a 46 John Deere A. It will start OK and run for maybe 60 seconds then pop or backfire and die, it is hard to start right away and does the same thing. Once is cools down it starts like is should but runs for 60 seconds pops and dies. I put new points, condensor, rotor and plugs but did not help. What's my problem, valves need adjusting or????? ????? Thanks for your help.

Ardie,

Sure sounds like a fuel supply issue to me. As Duane stated, check the fuel flow to and through the carb.

Good Luck,

I have a john deere 60 and it did the same thing. It has an auto matic fuel shutoff that is run by oil pressure. I took of the bowl and cleared out the line and made sure gas would flow steadily and then started the tractor and it ran for as long as i wanted it. If i were you i would make sure lines are clear and it has good flow. And one more thing is that the reason it backfires is that it is getting to much fuel than what it's supposed to so make sure that your float is not craked or damaged and your needle valve is not stuck oh and make sure the carb adjustments are set write. Good luck BEN

Ardie,
Two things come to mind - a fuel shortage or a coil problem. Open the bowl drain on the carb and let the fuel run for at least a minute. If it runs a good stream for a minute, the problem lies elsewhere. If it does not, something is restricting the fuel flow from the tank, and will need to be located. The sediment bowl strainer (if in place) is a candidate, or a build-up of rust in the gas tank, or a partially blocked (or kinked) fuel line.

If the fuel flow is satisfactory, check for spark when the tractor quits. If there is a good hot spark the coil is working properly. If not, wait till it cools down and check again for a good, hot, blue spark. If there is no spark, check the coil secondary resistance, it should be in the 5000 - 10000 ohm range. If the coil is ok, post back with the fuel flow and coil test results and we'll go from there.
