I have a neighbours 2955 in the shop that will idle down to 900rpm and then all on its own rev up to 1500-1700rpm then slow down to 1200 or so then sometimes just idle down to 900. I looked in the glass fuel filter and there appears to be air bubbles passing through the filter from the bottom to the top. I checked the flexible line from the fuel tank to the boost pump and its not leaking ( sucking) in air. The fuel level in the tank is above the fuel lione going out of the tank. I am not sure what is the problem is. Can anyone give me an idea of where to look? Customer says the tracter just started doing this on its own while baling hay.

I have had a similar issue with a 2950. The fuel filter case (square glass) gasket was leaking. For some reason, the seal was broke. It has happened a couple of times. Push in on it with the tractor running and see if the bubbles stop. The only way we fixed it is to replace the filter and gasket.

loosen the bleed screw on the fuel filter base while engine is fast idling. if there is no flow from the bleed screw, your filter is clogged. (you can change the filter anyway).

Hook a clean source of fuel directly up to the injection poump, elevate it above the engine so there's no chance of getting air to the diesel pump, and see if it settles down. If it does, you'll have to track down the source of the air leak, and obviously, if it doesn't you'll have to have the injection pump repaired!

Is there a dip tube in the tank that could be cracked, or could there be a restriction somewhere?

THanks Bob
There is a dip tube in the tank and the fuel level is filled above ( covering the entire tube).I pressurized the line from the tank to the fuel filter outlet and I had no leaks. The only thing that makes any sense to me is that it is sucking air somewhere along this line or the boost pump but I put 100psi air pressure on the outside of the fuel filter and plugged off the line at the tank and had no leaks or pressure drop for 5 minutes. The only thouyght I have since had is that the boost pump could be the source of the air but then I should have had a pressure drop when it was pressurized. The owners told me they had the injection pump worked on about 7 years ago and the tractor has only 3400 hrs on it now. My tractors all have gone a lot further before having pump problems but I don't have any with this make of a pump an them.

I thought you might be interested to know what I found to be the problem as its still seems a little unusual to me.
The line from the boost pump to the fuel filter at the fuel pump has an elbow and this was loose. When I put my hand on the line and pulled it down quite by accident the bubbles quit coming in the filter and the engine ran normal. A little teflon sealer and reattaching the elbow solved the problem.
The thing I can't understand completely, although I watched it happen, is why would a line under pressure suck air in?
Is it possible that the boost pump could be getting weak and the injection pump actually creating a vacuum? Anyways the tractor is running fine now and it is a new lesson learned for me. Thank you all
