i have a 1953 60 with live powertrol that i finally got around to hookin the ol 8w john deere sickle mower up to(i'm a little behind). Heres the deal, when ever i operate the powertrol the engine misses and sounds like its sucking air, sounded to me like it was worse on one cylinder than the other. (sounded like one completly dead cylinder and one that wasnt healthy)So i decided to check the valve lash just for the heck of it and sure enough less than .001" clearance on both valves on the #1 cylinder but #2 was still sittin pretty at .020". I put it back together and it still runs like crap while running the hydraulics. so i guess the question is what can cause this problem, could it anything other than Cam bearings.
oh yeah one other thing my governer makes noise it never used to(if that makes a difference). this problem just kinda came up is otherwise a very mechanically sound tractor. I got some ditches to mow so i hope its nothing to serious. Thanx in advance, Justin Jaton

I'm betting your right in suspecting the cam bearings. I parted alot of tractors and those A's and 60's have a problem with the left hand cam bearing going bad. I once had an AR brought to me to fix the owner said he tried everything and took it everywhere no one could it get to run right.Missing ,backfireing. I was lucky enough to have a dyno to run it on it would run real good under load until you touched the hydraulic lever or the steering wheel this would put a load on the governor mounted pump as it had add on power steering pump on the fan and live hyd. pump on the gov. causing a miss.
--- The good news is that it's not that bad to get to the left hand cam bearing to replace. The right hand one is alot harder but just doing the left hand one may be all that is needed.
--You can pull off the LH bearing after you get the fylwheel off ,I think you may need to loosen the push rods, take the LH bearing cover off cut or pry the cage off the tapered bearing then I was able to use a puller designed for auto power steering pulleys and alt. bearings and pull off the bearing using the outer lip since the cage and rollers are out of the way. Heat a new one up and drive it back on. Remove the race from the cover by welding along the bearing surface turn it over and it should fall out when cooling.

The only time it misses is when the hydralic pump has a load on it i dont have any problems at tractor pulls with it missing, thats what made me suspect cam bearings, that and the fact that there was almost 0 lash on the valves on the left side and it was fine on the other its one of those cases where i was hoping to be mistaken but the more i think about it and after some one else agreeing i think ill have to dig in to it one of these next days.

Do you have one of those auto powersteering pulley pullers ?? I think mine is a KD from NAPA It fit that bearing perfect. Mine has two half shells with different sizes on each end and a sleeve that slips over the 2 halfs to hold it together and tight when pulling.

When was the last time you Greased the front fan bearing ( if it doesent have power steering).. That front bearing on the fanshaft get's neglected and can sure make it sound like a racket in the governor..!! To me it sounds like the powervalve needs to be opened up more.. If you have it set lean for light loads, it will act like that on heavy loads.. Maybe there is dirt laying in the float bowl, or one of the fuel screens in the carb inlet needs to be cleaned.. Might want to check the compression, you may have burnt a valve with the setings set so close.. Ron.
