Gen light runs constantly. Both Batteries connected to chassis (Add on side battery holder). Oviously this indicates the generator is not charging.

Are there any things I can check to try to troubleshoot this? Where should I begin?

Both batteries connected to chassis? Is that a (-) from each battery connected to chassis or a (+) from one battery and the (-) from the other battery both connected to the same point? What is the voltage measured across each battery when the tractor is shut down. And what is the voltage across each battery when running at pto rpm? Is one battery going dead? Has any electrical loads been added to the tractor? Is the generator pulley and/or the fan belt worn out?

First, check for the obvious, like broken wires near the generator or voltage regulator, or stuck generator brushes.

If you need to go deeper than that, you'd better have a wiring diagram of the 24 Volts system, and understand it. There is no room for error with the 24 Volt system, and there'll be sparks and smoke if you goof up! Disconnect the batteries before working with the wiring anywhere on the tractor, generator area, starter, etc., for safety.

There is a standard way the batteries were connected up to the system at the factory, and over the years, this may have been changed, which makes it a bit difficult to troubleshoot over the 'net!

Email me if you need a wiring diagram!

Bob,

I have the same problem with a 1962 4010 diesel. I have performed a wire continuity check between the regulator and generator. The generator has no shorts to ground. Everything appears to be in order. Could you sent me a wiring diagram and any pointers to troubleshoot the regulator and generator so I can isolate the faulty component.

Thanks, Raymond
