Painting Inside Gearbox / Crankcase ?

I just had my 1937 AR rearend, and gearbox / crankcase acid cleaned to remove all of the paint. Is it necessary to paint the inside of these items? One person told me this was done to prevent oil from soaking through the casting, while another said it is done to improve oil flow. I can purchase this special mastic paint for about $ 80.00, but is it necessary?

Thanks

Michael

I have a different opinion. The manufacturer of your tractor knew this was a piece of heavy duty equipment that was expected to have a very long life span....unlike the automotive industry. I thought they did it to help keep rust down in the sump extending your drain intervals among other things.

Auto and light truck tranny's and 3rd members are cast from the same iron and aren't painted and don't leak fluid.

This is true, I never thought of it that way. I work on machine tools for a living, and they always have their gearboxes painted. However as you said I have never seen a car gearbox done from the factory. I ordered the Glyptal Mike told me about, and it states "It Improves Oil Circulation". Who Knows?

Thanks Mark for your input.

If all of your original inside coating is gone from the acid cleaning it would be better to recoat it now then find out later you should of. Afterall this was done for a reason otherwise I'm sure the factory would not of spent a dime more than nessesary to built in the first place.
--- I see Eastwood company sells a product called Glyptol or something like that for I think less than that $80.00 stuff. I can't find a catalog right now to double check it.
--- I wish I would of known about this stuff and had a source for it years ago I'd recoated my tractors inside just for extra protection because some were getting worn off.

I ordered a quart of Glyptal today from Gesco, for $21.33. Much better price.

Thanks again for the help.
