I'm thinking about upgrading my primary tractor from a 1650 Oliver to either a 4030 or 4040 John Deere, mainly to get a cab. And I never did care for Oliver's Hydra-Lectric hydraulic system. Is there much difference between the two JD's? I know the 4030 has the 329 engine like my 4400 combine. Anything else I should know? Thanks. Jim.

the 4040 was actually 4230 with reduced power and the other features of the 40 series over the 30 series. the 4040 was availible with powershift, the 4030 wasn't.

The 4040 is a bit more rugged and heavier, it has the 404 which is a bigger block than the 329 and has more power (about 95 HP at the PTO, I think, versus about 80). The 4030 was the upgraded replacement for the 3020 and the 4040 is in the 4020 power class but a bit heavier. If I had a choice and the price was similar, Id go for the 4040. But both are superb tractors, so it comes down mainly to budget and how good the tractor's condition is.

The 4040's engine (404) was basically the same engine block that was used in the 4230/4430/4630, only naturally asperated. It was designed for a far greater power output, so it was "over-kill" in it's 90 HP configuration. The 4030 was a good tractor, but it was stretched to it's power limits. The 4040 had heavier/better hydraulics, and was just a superior tractor. All things being equal, I'd go with the 4040. Both ar good, one is better. John

Thanks guys. Good advise from all. Think I'll start looking for that 4040. Jim.
