I see the ampmeter as having a plus side & a minus side. What side is the "load" side, & what side is the "hot,battery supply"side?

It depends on the ammeter, and whether it is used in a positive ground system, or a negative ground system.

One side will be connected ONLY TO THE BATTERY.

The other side will be connected TO THE CHARGING SYSTEM AND ALL ELECTRICAL LOADS.

After verifying the above, if it reads backwards, swap ALL wires to the opposite posts.

Thanks Bob,
I finally have enough information that your responce makes sense. I'm 99% sure that I have it wired correctly, & still the amp shows no charging, even after grounding the Field on the generator. I think I will have the generator checked again. The amp does show discharge when the lights are turned on. (this is on a J.D. LA)

Check the VOLTAGE at the battery, and also at the "A" (Armature) post on the generator.

Without a functioning charging system, a 6 Volt battery will quickly drop to about 6.25 Volts (after being charged with a battery charger to nearly 7.5 Volts).

For your generator to fully charge the battery, it must be putting out AT MINIMUM, 6.9 Volts,and probably closer to 7.5 Volts. Your ammeter will not swing to positive charge unless the generator is putting out enough voltage so that current is flowing INTO the battery
