The manual calls for a 100* thermostat in the pony. I tested mine and it opened at 146 and at 195 it still was just cracked open. Deere does not offer these any more, and the Dole Valve co. was sold to Eaton. Eaton's web site does not offer this thermostat. Has anyone replaced the thermostat in the pony? What was the temp range of the thermostat? Where did you find one? I have just rebuilt the pony and do not want to burn this little motor up because of a bad thermostat or heat range. Can I get by with out the thermostat in the pony? I live in Texas and the winters do not get too bad here. I have contacted K&K and Greg Stephens. No dice or return answer. Thanks for the help in Advance

You don't want to send big time hot water (all at once) down to that big time cold diesel. Hence the 100 degree thermostat. I'd go without 'till you find the right one.

Have you guys tried looking at a Stant catalog or at their display rack at Autozone?

I have often been able to match up a T-stat body that way. It might require some trimming of the skirt to fit the housing, but you'll likely be able to find a quasi-match. With so many three and four cylinder engines out today with smaller hoses, the odds are pretty goos that you will find something that can be adapted.

Frank,

I think the big issue in trying to find a match is the operating temperature. It's hard to find anything else that uses a thermostat that opens at 100 degrees. I would rather run without a t-stat than to have one at say 180 degrees on that pony.

I would think that only being 100 degrees, that the t-stat is more for restriction than quick warmup. Deere must have had a good reason as they added them at some point. I would imagine that this was to correct something that they saw as a problem.

Anyway, you're absolutely correct on the automotive matchups. I believe that Deere is around $6.50 for the t-stat for my 720, and I can get it at NAPA for around $4.00.

Hopefully Brandon is lurking around here somewhere and will chime in as he was looking for one for his 80 a while back. I know that the very early V4 ponies didn't even have a thermostat. If you don't have very cold winter weather, I wouldn't worry about having one. At the very least, you could make a sort of restrictor plate to take it's place. That way you could slow the flow down and effectively raise the operating temperature.

Don't lose faith in Greg Stephens, he has hundreds of us needy people calling him daily and he is not much more than a one man show. Try emailing him at "parts@theoldtractorcompany.com". I know he has had some email trouble in the past week or so, but if you are persistent, you will get him on the phone. Surpisingly, he usually knows what he does and doesn't have before he even checks the computer. He is your best bet to find a thermostat.

I'm still around!

Unfortunately, I can't help. I have yet to find a thermostat! I managed to get ahold of Greg a while back....

"Thermostat is obsolete, I have one left and it is $69.15. I will also check to see if I have a used one and let you know"

I don't really know a good place to look. Except maybe Dennis Polk, though I don't want to give up a week's paycheck for a used thermostat.
