JD B low oil pressure????

Last winter I repainted and fixed up a 1946 B that I have had and used for nearly 15 years. In the process if fixing it up I replaced the cup that holds the oil filter in place because the large (4-5") washer had been missing for as long as I owned the tractor. I also replaced all the gauges, including the original but rusty oil pressure gauge. I used gauges from Atique Guges inc. After I finished the cosmetic restoration and started it up I noticed that the oil pressure shown on the new gauge is drastically lower than what I had on the old gauge. Both gauges have the same style of unnumbered face. Is the low oil pressure reading due to the new gauge that is calibrated differently or was the removal of the washer in the oil filter assembly an old farmer fix for low oil pressure?

Thanks in advance,
Alan

Alan, here is one thing to consider. On my "D" the oil pressure control valve [spring loaded flapper plate] is down-stream of the filter element. I think your tractor is the same, but you need to confirm this. You have added resistance to the flow of oil from the pump by adding that large washer - which is now forcing all of the oil to flow thru the filter element instead of allowing all of the oil flow to bypass the element. IF your oil pump is badly worn, it is possible that it can't pump high enough pressure to overcome the pressure drop in the filter and still provide the desired pressure to the bearings, etc, and guage. If the plate has been missing for 15 years, I believe you have had no oil filtering for 15 years. Unless the crankcase has been thoroughly cleaned, the filter will pick up a lot of crud and the pressure drop across the filter element will rise quickly.

This is in addition to the other suggestions below that relate to determining gauge accuracy.

Best of luck,
JC

Alan, removing those washers probably has [had] no effect on your oil pressure. ~As stated below, you should either install a KNOWN GOOD numbered gage & see what your oil pressure really is, or calibrate your gage so you know for sure what pressures L,M,H really are. ~You can test your gage by hooking it to a tire inflator end then setting a tire's pressure to known pressures with a good tire gage, then re-checking the pressure using your oil pressure gage.
~On your low [or perceived] low oil pressure. It could be a difference in gage calibrations, or you have engine wear, or you have gasoline in your engine oil [a common problem], or you over-tightened the oil filter lower cover when replaced the filter parts & that bent the top of the oil filter body or broke the oil filter head [both common Deere problems IF the lower oil filter cover was EVER over-tightened].
~Your oil pressure should be 10-15 lbs at fast idle on a [working hot] engine.

First thing I'd do is "Tee" in a "known good" gauge that has PSI on the dial and compare the reading with the recommended pressure for your tractor and the reading on the aftermarket guage. Someone on this site will know what the pressure range in psi should be.

If it helps at all, I bought an oil pressure gauge from JD for my "D". IF the correct gauge for your tractor from John Deere happens to be AA1653R [your local JD parts person can verify this for you], mine is calibrated as follows:
L mark = ~5 psi
M mark = ~10 psi
H mark = ~13 psi
Last mark on the scale =~16 psi.
These readings were taken with a 0-60 psi gauge so they are only approximate. I friend of mine bought aftermarket gauges for his tractor and is seeing lower than expected oil pressure readings. He hasn't gotten into it enough to know if its the gauge or the tractor.

Alan I have the same problem with a 1952 G, my old gauge read little over M at slow idle the new gauge read between L and M on fast idle, I used a pressure gauge that reads Lbs to test both gauges(white face) the old gauge reads L 6 lbs, M 11 lbs, H 17lbs, the new gauge(white face) I got from the same place you did L 6 lbs, M 16 lbs, H 23 lbs. Dublins are made in Tulsa I even ordered new gauge from another company made in China and it read the same as the other gauge. The way I see it you have one of two choices leave it read what its reading or set up the pressure on your pump. John
