Alan, on the steering oil?... The absolute best is the Deere recommended P/S oil for pre 1960 2-cylinder tractors P/N AF 2235R. You could use Deere Hy-Guard in a pinch [I use it for most testing & on leakers until repaired].. I have run some viscosity tests on about every hydraulic & motor oil I could easily get a hold of & so far nothing tests the same as the Deere steering oil at ALL temperature ranges. ~On the clutch problem.. That could be many things form a worn pin or pin hole for the anti-rotational pin in the operating sleeve to wear on the toggles or dogs, to a mis-assembly problem.. If you had the toggles out there is a chance they werent put back in the same holes in the operating sleeve or in the same dogs.. A little wear & parts installed in new places can add up to an erratic clutch.. ~You might try backing the clutch adjustment off a little as that sometimes helps.. ~What I have found that will usually help that clutch engagement problem is installing a set of AR- 21803R conical washers under the adjusting nuts.. If you already have those washers then you will have to look for a worn operating sleeve pin or pin hole, or wear on the dogs or dog pins, or wear in the pulley dog pin holes. ~If your adjusting bolts have ridges worn in the sides of the bolts that could also cause your problem so look for step wear on the adjusting bolts [that step wear causes the bolts to hang in the guide holes when a load is applied to the clutch].. Any questions on the above just post back or E-Mail [probably post back works best as I am light years behind on my E-Mails at the moment].. [email protected]
