'35 B - generator pulley?

I just finished rebuilding a 1935 B. The fan shaft has a v-belt pulley and spring just behind the fan. According to the parts book, this is a generator pulley. Since its manual start, I'm assuming that it was for an auxillary generator, perhaps to run field lights? Does anyone have information as to how it was used, or know where I can find additional information?

Jon, That wasnt originally a pulley for an auxiliary lighting generator, I agree with clooney, you probably just have a replacement for a later generator equipped B which is why the pulleys on there.

Good Luck n God Bless

John, more than likely you have a later replacement fan & pulley.. Your original fan had a rubber hub with no pulley. The later & replacement fan had a pulley & clutch type fan.. Those early rubber fan hubs failed at a frequent rate so many were replaced with the later type fan assembly & clutch..

Jon, on those originals? Most are in pretty bad shape by now.. Usually the rubber in the original fan hubs are deteriorated to the point that the fan can come loose from the hub & allow the fan to go through the radiator. It is really hard to tell the rubber condition by just looking at the fan. You will also need the original fan spacer to go with the original rubber hubbed fan.

I have a few parts tractors I will take a look at.

I was also looking a "Restoration Guide for the Modle B", by Robert N. Pripps and did find a picture of a 1936 unstyled with lights on it! According to the text, "Lighting outfits were available from John Deere as early as the late 1920's for both the D and GP tractors."

Then, the unstyled parts shows the pulley (part no 52A and the lamps part no 65 ab.) So, based on this photo, maybe the pulley could be ordered as an option in 1935? What do you think?

Jon, a lot of those early lighting only kits mounted the generator over by the clutch pulley & ran the generator from the clutch pulley [at least the old D kit did].

Just look at your fan, if it has the new style disk slip clutch & spring it is a replacement.. If it still has the rubber inner hub it could be original with an added pulley..
