Just got a 2040 with mfwd, the left brake pedal is down, the chrome piston is pushed in and does not come out when you lift up the pedal, any suggestions? Also how do you engauge and disengauge the front axle? (all the labels are bleeched out by the sun)

Check the transmission filter for shiney metal flakes. Tell the vender you want your money back if there is.

These tractors in mfwd are very hard to find in these parts and $$$$$, it would be worth a new transmission it necessary

We have to wonder about the previous owner's care and operation of this tractor. Driving it with the front wheels engaged at all speeds will have produced extra wear on the drivetrain and tires when on the road etc. They were not too concerned about one brake on working correct either. Pop the covers off the left side of the bell housing and see if the steeing linkage and the clutch throw-out bearing have ever been greased. Use a chemical test strip and check the anti-freeze for been acidic and the sleeves/block erroded by cavitation. This tractor's initial cost plus repairs maybe the price of a brandnew one with warrenty. Engine block, sleeves, clutch, tires, brakes, high/low clutch packs, worn hydraulic pumps.

The owner died, a brother had the tractor and it sat out side for a couple of years, I looked at it a year ago and the brake worked, now the piston is froze in. I agree on the new tractor, it is a gamble buying used, but that is why we have JDeeres, otherwise just buy one of those imports brand new for $10-13000 and throw it away when your done.

Thanks, I will head down to the Deere Dealer and see what they have for a magic "kit". The switch for the MFWD has 3 terminals, presently only one wire connected to it and one hanging near by. Do those IT serv manuals have wiring diagrams?

in the brake valve, the piston is stuck. usually that happens when the pistons get rusted after a long time without use. i think the best thing to do is to remove the brake valve and to replace all seals, check and adjust valves and replace pistons if requiered.
the mfwd is operated by a switch on the dash. when mfwd is on, power to the solenoid is cut. the mfwd clutch is spring engaged and electrohydraulically disengaged. in short, the mfwd is 'normally engaged'. you need both power to the solenoid and hydraulic pressure to disengage.
