Hello,

I'm hoping somone out there can help me! I recently was giving my dads John Deere 1962 riding mower (model 60). He insists it runs, and when he is around it does! But when I use it, it runs for about 20min and dies. He paid to have his mechanic fix it, but it still does the same thing. I don't know much about engines, but rebuilt the carberator....now it runs in "choke", but dies when I try to take it out into high. If I spray starter fluid, it loves it! Is this even worth bothering with? If you could reply to my email [email protected] - I would appreciate it!

That is not a clueless question but a sensible question. With good background info and a pleasant not demanding manner. I/we wish there were more persons like yourself. I'm looking for a 60 or 70 lawn tractor for my daughter to make a "set" with her Grandfather's 60 field tractor or my 70's.

Hello KC. I have an original John Deere service manual on the "60" and "70" garden tractors for sale. Let me know if this is of interest to you. Robert.

Make sure your gas tank cap vent is not plugged. Your carburetor adjustment may be off if it only runs with the choke on since you last worked on it. If there is a rubber hose between the tank and carburetor, replace it. These come apart inside with bad results. Learned that the hard way, like most everything else.

If that doesn't do the trick, I would suggest taking everything back apart and cleaning everything from the tank to the carb. These have a pretty simple carburetor, but cleanliness is real important.

According to the Weekend Freedom MAchines website, the 60 was first built in 1966 and is very collectible.

KC,
It sounds like you have a carb problem still,,Or there is crud in your tank after all the years and it keeps plugging up the carb .May have to take the tank off and clean it out and the lines. You have Dirt of some kind I bet messing you up. Clean the air filter or take it off and see if that helps. If you have to choke it to keep it running than one of the fuel passages is still plugged. A good second guess is that the fuel filter or strainer is plugged with crud. Sounds like the fuel bowl must run out of gas . The flow of gas getting to the bowl must be restricted some where. Some times you can take the screw out of the bottom of the bowl and let the gas run out for a while and it will clear the dirt out.... It only takes one little piece of crud to mess up a carb.
I'm sure you are gonna get a bunch of Ideas from the post's to follow. But this is a start.
