1954 Model 40S Rockshaft Seals

I am getting ready to paint my late Grandpa's 40 and have fixed all the leaks by replacing misc. seals and bearings,or so I thought. I have leaks on both rockshafts(single t-o-m),my IT manual does not address how to replace the seals,it shows a retainer and seal,can I replace these without pulling the housing? If not,is it much of a job? Any info. greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joe

Deere still carries a replacement seal. it looks more like a normal oil seal than the original seal that was on the rockshaft. the metal retainer is no longer carried, and in fact the replacement part for that is the same seal that replaces the oil seal (if you can follow that). what i did was replace the original seal and retainer with two of the new replacement seals. i haven't had much chance to use my 40U since i replced them a few weeks ago, but it looks like it should seal everything.

i think you could replace the seals by just pulling the lift arms off if you pulled the retainer and seal out and used the two new seals as replacements.
(can i use the word seal anymore in this post????)

Joe, I bought some a couple of years ago from the local deere dealer. Never installed them. After looking at them, i didn't think it was feasable to do with out a tear down. The seal are more recessed than i thought. Besides, the recess is packed with grit, grime, dirt, and whatever else. After seeing Clooney's comment about o ring, I wonder if the lift arm could be removed, cleaned some, then slip an o ring on the outside, replace the lift arm, I may look at that sometime.

Joe, there really isn't much of a seal in those 40's.. Couple that with a little shaft wear & housing/bushing wear & those 40 rockshafts leak pretty good if overfilled or used on a side hill.. There is a sub sort-of-seal that replaces the original retainer [if Deere even still carries that]..

~I usually just add an �O� ring on the shaft inside the housing to cause some of the oil to drip off & not run along the shaft & out the sides..

~A real good cure is to machine the rear housing & use the later 420 seals, that usually stops the oil leaks for good..

~You can probably get those original outer retainers out without pulling the rock shaft but will more than likely ruin them in the process [I don�t think they are available any longer]..
