My dad went to a farm auction last night where there was a 4010 with JD loader, average to fair tin, less than 100 hrs on complete OH, 4 brand new tires, dont know the year of it but it brought $10,000. Just a little FYI from northeast Oklahoma. KS

That's quite a bit of money for a 4010, but when you consider $1000+ in new tires, a $4000 overhaul and so forth, that's pretty reasonable. Of course the loader helps, too.

Why is that alot of money? If it was overhauled it has the 4020 spec on the engine. They are basically the same tractor, are they not?

It almost certainly was overhauled with 4020 sleeves and pistons, but that does not make it a 4020. The 4020 had several areas that were improved over the 4010, it wasn't a simple rebadging of an old design. Get a parts book for each and start comparing numbers, and you'll see what I mean.

According to JD dealer sales person, a JD 4010 diesel is only 200 pounds more than my JD 3010 diesel. That makes it 6,200#. A JD 4020 diesel (according to owners manual) without power shift is a little over 8000#.

If after the overhaul of a 4010D, the pump is turned up to attain the 93hp, you still have to add lots of weight or all you will do is constantly spin out.

I believe JD got the extra weight in the 4020 by having heavier blocks, and I believe heavier rearend housings, but I do not know that for a fact.

Plus the hydraulic lines on the 3010/4010 are 3/8 ID and the 3020/4020 lines are 1/2 ID if I recall correctly.

So, in my opinion, unless you do just stationary PTO work and no loader work, a 4010D is not the same as a 4020D.
