I know they came with steel wheels, but ours was converted to rubber tires and i was wondering what size was the option for that year. The ones on it are shot and need replaced, but they are 9-38's and I cant find anything like that anywhere... I'm wondering if they really should be 9-36's? Rears only...the fronts are pretty good.

Aaron31,
I can provide a bit more background about wheels and tires on your B. In 1938 (after production of unstyled B's quit) Goodyear introduced the wide-base tire. Prior to that there were no 38" tires, only 36" and 40". The wide-base tire sat lower than the original ("conventional") tire because it had a wider rim. Thus, to keep the same ground-axle clearance the 38" tire and rim was introduced.

Since you have 9-38 tires, the conversion was done after 1938. In 1957 tire measurements were taken at different places on the tire, so your 9-38 became a 9.5-38 tire in today's system. However, Miller Tire does not offer a 9.5-38 tire, the closest is a 11.2-38, which would have been a 10-38 pre '57. That should work fine on your rim. I would choose a set of those tires (they are available in different tread designs) rather than finding a 36" rim and changing to that. The unstyled B on rubber originally came on F&H round spoke wheels, and took either 7.50-36 or 9.00-36 (by far the most common). Note that the 9.00 size is NOT the same as your 9 - that measurement change occurred with the introduction of the wide-base tires. You can check out www.millertire.com for more details on tires available.

This is for 1937 Models Acording to Dykes Automobile and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia, 1941. The B was 7.50 X 36 with 5:00 X 15 front with steel 48 X 5 1/4, 22 X 3 1/4. The A was 9:00 X 36 with 5:50 X 16 front with steel of 50 X 6 and 24 X 4 with rubber being an option. The D had 12:75 X 28 and 7.50 X 18 and Steel of 46 X 11 1/8 and 28 X 6. The G was not listed. For 1939 the wheel and tire sizes are. B, 7.50 x 36, 48 x 5 1/4, 5.00 x 15, 22 x 3 1/4, A, 9.00 x 36, 50 x 6, 5.50 x 16, 24 x 4, G, 10.00 x 38, 51 1/2 x 7, 6.00 x 16, 24 x 5, D, 12.75 x 28, 46 x 12, 7.50 x 18, 28 x 6. 11.2 x 36 smallest in new tire sizing, 9.00 x 36 would convert to 11 x 36 and latest sizing 12.4 x 36, the 11.2 would be a bit biger than the orignal 7.50.

Thanks everyone for answering my post. Its still going to be very tough to find anything for a 38 inch rim though. My rim looks to be approximately 9 inches in width....its tough to measure...the tires are still on it. Its a cut down F&H rim with flat spokes. But from what I've read here if I wanted to be more original I would go with a 36 inch rim from somewhere correct? This tractor is already restored...older restoration by my Dad over 20 years ago, but has been shedded all that time, but the tubes are just leaking and the tires arent good either with cracks and such.

If the rims are good and you are not wanting to plow with it then go for the 11.2 38, they will fit and give you better speed for a parade, the smaller size was to give more power to plow with but it cut your ground speed to do it

Thanks. You don't think it will look weird being wider.. what I mean is sort of bulge out from the rim to where it looks a little funny compared to what is on it now.

I don't think you will actually notice anything, if the rims were wider that is when it would be noticible with to small a tire on, the duals I had for one tractor were made from rims from a cut of spoke wheel when I got them, they had 13.6 x 38 on and only when I got rid of them did I find out how narrow they were, 7 1/2" I new they were a little narrow but I thought they were about 9", The one tire I had on matched one setting here loose and I thought I would get more out of them if the tires were seperate from the rims and also that someone might just want the narrow rim for a restoration. I don't think wou will see a bulge as the narrower rim will just make the sides of the tire look straight with the tread instead of being wider like if a 11.2 tire was used on a 10" rim, now if you were to put that tire on a 11" or larger rim thet is when it would not look right as you would see the bead past the tread

Thanks for the reply again.

I remeasured and I believe these rims are 8" rims. If I'm measuring right. So you don't think an 11.2 tire is going to bulge much when stuck into that 8" size at the bottom? Just wondering again... I just want it to be as right as possible... don't want to make a mistake because these tires will probably be on it for at least the rest of my lifetime.

I also have a set of duals for the B. But there is almost no way I'll ever find tires for it. Nobody I've talked to has ever seen anything like them before.. they use 5-44 tires. Someone tried to buy them off me and my Dad about 20 years ago and we wouldn't sell them, but they aren't doing much good rotting in the shed either. The tires themselves look ok except at the bottom where they have been sitting on the same place for 30 years at least, but the tubes are obviously shot. Its dark in the shed they are in and I cant even tell you who made them, but nobody seems to even beleive me when I tell them about em.

I know what those tires are, there was a set on a Deere at one of the Expo's at Grundy Center a few year ago, Deere may have more information, I think they were on a G, I may or may not have a picture here but I have no idea where to look for my pictures from then. I would just put on those 11.2 and forget it, you could even put 12.4 on and they would work

We had 3 of those unstled B tractors around here. My dad had one and two of his brothers each had one. They were all on cut down rims and all had 10-38 tires. How wide are your rims? Remember in 56 or 57 they went to the new designators for tires sizes. We also have a 41 B and it has one round spoke French & Hecht wheel with a 11.25 36 tire. It was a replacement wheel. Also when the 37 was converted you had to wait in line so to speak to get a set of tires.

My rims measure 8" if I'm measuring right. I sure wish they would have opted to use the 36" rims and not the 38's 9.5-36 tires are easy to find. But 9 or 9.5-38's are impossible... I know a lot of people say just put the 11.2's on it...but I can't see how that could look right..
maybe I'm wrong though.

I believe the originals were 7.50 or 9 X 36. The person that converted the rear wheels had the option of using a 36 or 38 inch rim. Since he used a 38 inch rim the smallest new tire you could use would be an 11.2 X 38.

I think they should be 9 or 9.50X36 but not really sure since my B has steel wheels but I looked at one a few weeks ago that had the 9.50x36 on it and I think it was right
