Finally the moon and stars must have aligned. I got the motor back from the machine shop and I seem to have all the necessary parts. This is the weekend of the pony motor! By this time tomorrow night, the little beast should be running again. With a little luck, this thing should last another 47 years.

The original reason for teardown was failed water pump seals, but I had no love for the rather large smoke cloud it produced so on with the rebuild. The pump seals looked as if they had failed many years ago. I guess once the weep hole clogged then the real trouble started!

The crankshaft only shows .003" wear after the machine shop cleaned it up. That's not too bad for 47 years! I guess we can thank the old farmers for not using the pony motor much and leaving something to work with. Most of the farmers I've known that had pony start diesels never used them because they didn't understand them and definitely didn't like the cost of ignition parts. The pony on my uncle's 70D hasn't been run in over 20 years!

Thanks to everyone who has given advice or recomendations along the way and a special thanks to Greg Stephen for his devotion to these old tractors! Without Greg, I would have spent several years tracking down usable parts or worse yet, spent thousands to have them custom made.

Keep your fingers crossed and I will post an update and pictures once the little guy is running.

My dad for several years to start his 720 diesel just roll started it down the hill rather than use the pony motor.

The pony on our 720 is back in the living also. We got fresh pony motor from our local tractor guy "Steve" for a VERY reasonable price, and after fireing, found the water pump seals had failed. Fixed them up with new seals and still leaked. New shaft took care of that and now it purrs along like a sewing machine. NO SMOKE, It is amazing, really. Good luck on the project!
Got my eyes now on a 70d from a lady who is selling out after her husband died suddenly. Pulled it to start the d'sel and it was smooth and no smoke or slobber at all. The tach worked and only shows 1089hrs, not bad. PROBLEM: The pony block is cracked open, but I think the block from the(early style) 720 will do to swap the parts into. It's piston rods failed, but didn't damage the block, so maybe the green God will smile on me?
Good luck
