I just wondered if anybody else has experienced anything like this also.

My local dealer always seems to charge outrageous shipping costs for every part that I order even if it just comes in on their stock order. I bought service manuals on CD 2 different times and one time was charged $10 shipping and the last time $15. For $5 I could have sent it FED-EX and had it the next day. I had to pay $15 and wait 2 weeks!!

Their other trick is to charge much more than the list price on the JDPARTS website. They sometimes charge 10% to 75% more than list price.

Other than the convenience of the local dealership, I get nothing from these crooks. I can actually order parts from Colorado and have them shipped directly to my house for much less shipping than I have to pay my "friends" at Deer Creek Equipment in Whiteford, MD.

I guess since I'm not a big time farmer and only spend somewhere less than $1000 a year, that gives them a license to rip me off every time.

The strange thing is that they have another branch 30 miles away in PA that doesn't seem to need the extra shipping cost, never charges more than list price and doesn't charge sales tax for ag parts. These guys are using the same computer system as my neighborhood crooks!!

I guess the only thing to do is travel the extra 1.5 hrs round trip to get treated fairly. Sorry for the rant, I just needed to vent!

With the price of gas and time, the 1.5 hour trip is costing you...why keep ordering from the higher priced "dealer" when you can get it cheaper and faster [and same quality] from a neighboring dealer???? i need some help with these answers...

good luck and i do understand the need to rant and vent...i am married and...well you know "the rest of the story"...lol

Of all the comments I've heard about bad dealers, it makes me glad that my local dealer (Polen Implement, Elyria, OH) is a good place to go! Charges the same price as the JDparts website, and no shipping charge with a stock order. Very great service and helpful. I try to always have the part numbers, but they have the parts books on the shelf if not! One time they even saved me about $50 by telling me that an aftermarket company had a part much cheaper than Deere itself.

And all I've ordered from them are parts. We don't have any new Deeres.

I have had good experiences with both Shearer's in Wooster (close to home) and Polen in Elyria (close to work). Would not hesitate to recommend either one.

Yes Brandon, I have also had good dealings with the parts counter at Polen, but I recently swithced to Shearer in Wooster because Polen refused to sign me up for subscriptions to their Furrow and Homestead magazines unless I bought a tractor from them. Shearer readily signed me up no questions asked before I bought ANYTHING. Where do you live?

I'm a customer of the Deer Creek branch in Oxford and have usually been well satified with their parts and repair service. If at all possible I order parts on their stock order to avoid the shipping cost. When I have had to pay shipping it's seemed reasonable. If you can document the discrepencies between the branches I'd go to the owner. Now parts from our local NH dealer, that's another story, and the reason my equipment lineup is getting greener all the time.

I have no idea what type of relationship you have with your dealer, but when I see this type of comment I have to wonder. I've dealt with the public for many years and found it takes a few bad coustomers to make you appriciate the good ones. Stop and think maybe this is the welcome mat made just for you.

yeah our JD dealer marks parts up 5% over deeres suggested price, i asked somebody in john deeres corporate division and he said they can't really control what the dealerships charge. i go to the JD construction dealer, they can still order ag parts, actually save 5%

Yes, I know Jerry & Bonnie, a good friend of mine works with Bonnie. I don't follow the micro minis so I don't know Scott.

I don't impose on my dealer at all. I give them the part numbers and always tell them that there is no rush so the parts can come on the stock order. I usually don't even argue with them. I have ordered through the website and that's when they really screw me! I guess it is easier to stick it to somebody when you don't have to face them!

The worst part is that they have 3 branches and the one other that I have dealt with don't act like this. All 3 branches are linked through the same computer system, but the people are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

My beef is not with mother Deere, just the local a$$ho1e$ that represent her!

Yes I know what you mean about the dealers, they are that way around here also. I don't buy much, just for my antiques and mower. Scott Jones does not work for that dealer but lives in that area. He is the state rep for MD Micro Mini's. Works for a JD yard equiptment store. Was out that way to pull last year on labor day for the East Coast Challenge, I think this year two of the pulls are in that area at a guy named Ricky Dudrow in his shop. Deer Creek Equiptment has been an event sponsor in the past. Don't know if they are this year or not.

Shoot! in '99 I sold parts for 5 months at a Ford Dealer whom I will not name in Albemarle, NC. We even marked up COD!

I've even seen the manager mark up "list" price. And woe be unto you if it were for a Church. I've seen List marked up 20% then discounted the same amount-with either the phrase "all discounts applied or Church discount applied" added to the bill.

It seemed that every shop around town had their own wholesale price-depending on how willing they were to go to the Ford dealer 20 min. east or the one 40 min west.

I guess I'm real lucky. My dealer, Hutson's in Clarksville TN is great. I order things on line and if it's a stock order there are no shipping charges. If I want things delivered home it's cheap. I recently sent in an order that I didn't hear about for a while and when I called they found they never got my order from big brother. They ordered it FEDEX to my house at no charge. I've bought a $4500 lawn tractor and some parts for my 420 over the last 4 years so I'm not a big time customer to them. I guess it's the luck of the draw.

My local dealer is a gem. I order over the phone and he gives me a break if I can wait until regular parts order. Their price is the same as the internet price. WHen I order, I have already checked whether the part is available by using JD parts.com. I give them the required part numbers and get a call later in the week when the parts come in. They are happy to help. However, I have seen guys standing at the parts counter having no idea what a parts book is trying to find out what part is what. These guys pay conderably more and they pay it in advance.
Just my 2 cents

Not aall Deere dealers are cut from the same quilt. One sure way to get their attention, however, is to document your concerns and notify Mother Deere. The territory area managers are usually adept at solving these type of 'inconsistent service' problems with sugar and spice, when necessary. Dealers are free to choose what price they will sell a particular part for, as Federal laws regarding collusion and price fixing prevent Deere (or any outfit)from requiring a dealer/franchisee to sell at MSRP.

Parts staff are usually incented by margin and one of the safest places to reap extra margin is from low volume clients looking for short application parts. The cost to stock short application parts is very high, and in many cases, a dealer is stuck with them if they are returned. Unfortunately, many an enthusiast has left a Deere dealer with ranging degrees of dissatisfaction, but it is usually due to a lack of concern for their needs (2cyl parts) vs. those of Joe Farmer.

The other side is if you are a client who never comes prepared (ie no part numbers, serial numbers, inability to describe what you need, or return parts regularly), the dealer should be in position to charge extra. I've always liked to provide part numbers (subs when necessary) and differentiate between busy times & slower times when ordering. Utilizing this method, you will find a dealer who values your business and isn't looking to hose you every chance they get. Some dealers have created a nice niche selling via web/telephone to collectors, having the items drop shipped directly from the servicing parts depot. Keep the faith - not all are alike!

Crooks maybe; Every JD operation has to make a buck and none have every sold me anything at gunpoint. Although sometimes it feels like it or seems like it. The real power is with the customer since your shoes never have to return to the scene of the "perceived crime".
Just gather up the details of the various surrounding JD service centers and give your business to the best crime syndicate in your region that offends you the least.
Overall the JD product line and parts operation are in the upper tier. Sometimes you just have have to make the tough decisions (like go to JD
with a big credit line for your next tractor or big purchase or suggest to your better half that she has to get a second job to support your addiction to JD or hit the highway ==just kidding folks). Well maybe the parts counter is often the scene of the crime, especially now with gas prices
wearing Arab turbins or some such thing.

I used to be a John Deere parts manager and sometimes we would eat some freight because it looks silly to charge $5 for freight on a $2 o-ring or something like that. We might lose money on freight one day but if a heavy or expensive item came in we would cover the small items with and additional dollar or two charge. We did not try to make money on the freight, just wanted to cover our costs. The manager of the store wanted to mark up the freight but I informed him we would not do that under any circumstances because I was a customer as well as an employee and I would not want that done to me. And it doesn't make any difference if you spend $100,000 a year on parts or just darken the door once for a 50 cent item. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and courteously, regardless of the volume they generate. If your dealer doesn't do that, find another dealer that will. They are out there. Mike

Mike,

WELL SAID!!! I appreciate your comments. I have one of the best John Deere dealers I have ever associated with here in North West Arkansas. I am 67 years old and have been around a lot of them in my life time.

Courteousy, excellent and fair treatment is their top priority. They are fair on their prices when comparing JD Dealers. They never charge me for S&H on stock orders.

Thanks for your post

Dick
