John Deere 60 questions

I just bought a 60 and it looks as if there are shutters on it. Is there any way of adjusting them, since I see no handle on the outside of the tractor. When running for a good while the temp. gauge does not show much movement, but when I stand -even 4 feet- beside it I can feel a considerable amount of radiating off of it.
Also does anyone have an original front rim for a 60 out there somewhere. Part number is something like JD1274R -just off the top of my head-.
thanks any help appreciated :)

Arthur:

A couple things to check. The shutter postion is controlled by a thermostat and bellows down in the lower part of the radiator. They are known to be a bit unreliable but also check to see if your shutters are moving at all as the tractor warms up. They often rust stuck. If they are stuck open it may be difficult to get the tractor to warm up well. If stuck remove the lever to the bellows and loosen them up with some good penetrating oil. Removal of the shutter aseembly from the radiator may be necessary to get to all the hinge points. Check the heat guge for proper operation by removing the heat gauge tranducer from the upper water pipe housing and insert it into boiling water and see if the gauge moves and reads 212 degrees.

You may have a combination of both problems. A little investigative work will isolate the problem.

Hi Arthur! I have a 50 with shutters also. On early 50's and maybe 60's they had thermostatily controlled shutters to controll engine tempture. Maybe your temp gauge is not reading correctly. good luck.

I have a 1953 model 50. It has shutters controled by a thermostat. They do get stuck easily. I would put a new temp. gauge on. It sounds like the one you have is not working properly.
