I finally pulled the clutch driver last night and found the culprit. The inside friction disc was broken. Amazingly, it exibited no other problems than not being able to get it to "snap in" occasionally.

The clutch driver came out with the use of a cross-bar puller and about 250 lbs of torque. Just when I was ready to stop cranking and use some heat, it popped loose.

Hopefully, I will get the pulley off tonight and find the cause of the oil leak behind it.

I believe that the cause of the broken plate was excessive pulley movement due to an improperly adjusted pulley brake. Do you think that this additional movement would allow the plate to become misaligned and break?

Thanks to all for the advice on the clutch driver removal!
