80 Clutch Driver

I know the most popular response will be to acquire a service manual, but I had an I&T and my brother lost it. A JD manual is on order. In the meanwhile, we need to remove the clutch driver to diagnose an oil leak. Do you use a puller on this model or do the bolts screw thru to push it off?

Also, what could be causing the clutch to not "snap in" at times and also allow oil to leak from the back side of the pulley? These 2 problems presented themselves at the same time. The clutch will work fine and then suddenly won't snap, then in a few minutes it works fine again. When this started, it began to leak a small amount of oil causing the inside edge of the pulley to sling it out.

Any help would be appreciated as it is needed for a parade next weekend.

720Deere, Im not sure if you can push that driver off with through bolts or not.. I dont even try.. I just use my big cross bar puller with bolts in the puller holes & plenty of heat on the driver.. Those drivers come off with difficulty & if too much pressure is used without heat the threads can pull out of the driver.

~On the clutch problem, the snap in & out problem could be broken internal parts, worn drive pin or hole, broken or de-laminated disks, or any number of other internal problems.. About all you can do is remove the pulley & check for proper operation & condition of all the internal parts.. [maybe you will get lucky & just find a delaminated disk]..

~On the oil leak?.. That could be a overfull reduction cover, or thinned oil, or broken operating sleeve, or plugged drain back holes, or ???..

~Have you checked for excess crankshaft end play? If the endplay gets excessive it could cause both of your above problems..

Clooney,

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I have all the clutch plates out and they all look good. The crank endplay doesn't seem to be an issue, but the pulley seems to have about 3/8" of movement.

The clutch operating problem is intermittent, so I assume that there is a problem in the operating parts.
